Discover Shibori - A Book Review

Discover Shibori - A Book Review

Shibori is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that creates patterns in fabric by using folds, pleats, and bunching. The fabric is bound with stitching, clamps, or rubber bands to prevent the dye from penetrating those areas. Only the exposed parts of the fabric are dyed, while the areas under the resist remain white or retain the color of the original cloth. Depending on the thickness and arrangement of the folds and bindings, the dyed areas may also display gradients or halftones of color.

I have written about Shibori in several blog posts:  Shibori Dye Resist and Shibori Dye Resist Part 2.  I also shared several Shibori projects in:  Let’s Dye . . . Marigold, Marigolds & Saxon Blue, Let’s Dye . . . Hibiscus, and Let’s Dye . . . Black Walnut.

Today, I have something a little different for you: a review of Debbie Maddy's newly published book, Discover Shibori: Creative Techniques in Natural Indigo Dyeing.

Self-described as "a textile artist with a passion for shibori techniques and natural indigo dye," Debbie enthusiastically shares her expertise, distilling that information into a practical learning guide. Along the way, she shares tips that have worked well for her, a sign of someone familiar with a subject.

Discover Shibori is a comprehensive reference and practical guide written in a clear presentation style. While the book can be read sequentially, the reader can also select a specific technique to learn.

The content is well organized into three sections:

Part One. The Basics of Shibori

  • a brief history of Shibori

  • in-depth instruction for preparing, dyeing, and maintaining indigo vats;

  • choosing and preparing fabrics for indigo dyeing.

Part Two. Major Techniques of Shibori

  • Itajame; five shape fold and clamp techniques plus Kanoko wrapping

  • stitched resists; over 20 techniques, including a URL and QR code to access her downloadable designs

  • Arashi wrapping around poles and binding

  • a bonus section on fun techniques: I've got to pull out my old Slinky!

Part Three. Projects

  • fun and practical applications for Shibori fabrics

The book's design is well-organized, featuring just the right amount of white space to enhance readability. I appreciate the white space, as it allows me to add my handwritten notes. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow and are complemented by numerous diagrams and stunning photographs.

In my opinion, Discover Shibori: Creative Techniques in Natural Indigo Dyeing is destined to be a classic on this topic.  It offers something for everyone interested in creating beautiful shibori fabrics. Whether you are new to indigo dyeing or Shibori, looking to learn a specific technique, or seeking inspiration for a new project, this book has you covered.
